Preparing For the Next Big Earthquake:

On 7 May 2008, Australia Network's NewsHour, which airs throughout Asia and the Pacific, broadcast "Preparing for the next big earthquake", a story focusing on the September 2007 earthquakes in the Mentawais and SurfAid's role in improving disaster response through the E-Prep program, which is sponsored by AusAID. The piece included information on SurfAid's efforts to expand the broadcasting capability of local radio in the islands, as well as an interview with E-Prep Programme Manager Jason Brown.

SurfAid International Reaches Milestone in Malaria Free Mentawai Program

SurfAid International has completed stage two of its Malaria Free Mentawai (MFM) program, delivering mosquito nets and malaria education to 53,000 people on three of the four Mentawai Islands, off Indonesia’s West Sumatran coast.

This milestone has been reached in 12 months, since the launch of the program in March 2007, despite delays when the SurfAid malaria teams were diverted to emergency work after the two major Mentawai earthquakes, measuring 8.4 and 7.9 on the Richter scale, in September.

Earthquake Relief Effort Succeeds!

THANK YOU! On behalf of the people of the Mentawai Islands affected by the two massive earthquakes last September, thank you to all the SurfAid International donors that contributed to the emergency relief effort launched by SurfAid International.

With your contributions, SurfAid distributed food, shelter, water, and medical help in partnership with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF – Doctors Without Borders) Belgium to communities totaling 47,000 residents.

SurfAid International Launches Quiksilver SurfAid Community Health Training Centre

SurfAid International has opened the first stage of the Quiksilver SurfAid Community Health Training Centre at Katiet, in the Mentawai Islands, off Indonesia’s West Sumatran coast.

The centre, which has been funded by the Quiksilver Foundation, has been designed by leading organic agriculturalist, Brendan Hoare.

Billabong's Design For Humanity Europe Benefits SurfAid!

On November 8th 2007 Billabong Europe launched their first DFH event in Paris bringing together the surf industry and media from across Europe to introduce the Billabong Girls Summer 2008 Collection, the DFH movement and the work of SurfAid International.

SurfAid International was incredibly fortunate to be chosen once again by Billabong Girls as the charity of choice for their Design For Humanity (DFH) division.

Additionally, from January to April 2008 there is a “Design For Humanity” art contest.

COMMUNITY-BASED HEALTH PROGRAM TAKES OFF
SurfAid's ongoing efforts to assist residents in lowering morbidity and mortality in the Mentawai Islands and Nias continues to make great progress.  The latest milestone is the establishment of Care Groups in each of 53 beneficiary communities as part of the SurfAid Community Based Health Programs.  Throughout the Mentawai Islands and Nias, 870 volunteers have been elected to SurfAid Care Groups; stewarding 37,000+ residents towards a healthier future.

MALARIA FREE MENTAWAI PROGRAM MAKES STRIDES
SurfAid International completed Phase 1 and 2 of the Malaria Free Mentawai program with exceptional results.  All targets were met including the distribution of over 14,000 mosquito nets.

First Training Held at Quiksilver-SurfAid Community Health Training Centre
The first training in composting and growing vegetables and fruit has been held at the Quiksilver-SurfAid Community Health Training Centre, a model home/garden program which is due for first-stage completion in November this year.

Disaster Comics for Communities
As part of its disaster preparedness program, E-Prep staff are distributing comics about tsunami, earthquakes, floods, cyclones and tropical storms and landslides.

While the comics have been developed for children, they also include basic information about disasters in the back and are also an important information tool for adults in the community.

SurfAid International and surf company Billabong launch a unique schools program that will have far-reaching effects around the world - alleviating suffering and death in impoverished communities.

The SurfAid International Billabong Schools Program will provide a dynamic learning opportunity for students, educating them about the geography, economy, culture, health and living conditions of the 70,000 people of the Mentawai Island region, off the coast of West Sumatra, Indonesia.

SurfAid's Innovative Usage of the Care Group Model Takes Center Stage

Dr. Dave Jenkins, founder of SurfAid International, was recently invited by UNICEF and World Relief, the creators of the Care Group model to give two presentations to groups of doctors and NGOs involved in childhood health in Indonesia.

Using the Care Group Model, SurfAid is teaching the mothers better nutritional practices, including breast feeding to six months, to make sure their children are getting enough micronutrients for normal brain development and growth.
